Sometimes it’s nice to download a video from a site so that you can watch it at your leisure without needing to be connected to the Internet. There are online services that will automatically do the video download/conversion for you, but sometimes the turnaround can be a little slow (or there just isn’t the level of customization you want).
xVideoServiceThief is a free cross-platform (and open source) app that can handle downloading videos from over 70 different online video sources. You can also configure it so that all downloads are automatically converted to one of seven different formats.
The free and portable Radical Image Optimization Tool (RIOT) has been an app I’ve recommended for a few years now (I think I’ve been using it since about 2008). As the name suggests it focuses on doing one thing, and doing it well optimizing images. It can compress, re-size, adjust, and convert your images in a way that leaves you in control of the end result.
The thing I like the most about riot is how easily I can manipulate multiple photos in just a few clicks. Thanks to the “batch” button on the toolbar I can select an entire folder of images that I want to re-size and/or compress, and the speed at which it can process the images is rather incredible. This is great for emailing off a slew of photos when you’re concerned about the attachment size.
Similarity is a pretty awesome app for anyone who doesn’t keep their music library organized. I don’t have a very large music library (just a few hundred songs), but I know people who have tens of thousands of songs. Once it starts getting that big I could see some duplicate songs sneaking in there… maybe because you’ve got two albums by the same artist that overlap a bit, which is very much possible once you start diving into “best of” albums. Similarity can try to take care of that for you.
PhotoFunia is worderful web tool that lets you to apply 70 special effects to your photo. It uses Face Detection technology to superimpose the photos that you have uploaded.
The website is deadly simple to use.All you have to do is to select an effect of your choice out of 70 special effects and then upload the photo.

I’ve once again started with sharing the cool web services and useful online tools I come across. A while ago I shared an online service to identify unknown music details.
Just for simple trimming/cutting of a MP3 file, I would certainly never go for a freeware or any install any application in my PC when I can easily find an online service to do the job for me.
Finding PDF files using Google is not a new trick and many people use that to look for PDF files they want. But a search engine specifically for this job is always better.
OpenPDF is a search engine for finding/searching PDF files available publicly online. There is nothing much to explain in as you just have to type in your query in the search box and hit Enter.
FileStomp is a very handy Web utility tool to compress or zip your files online. You can select either one file or a set of file there is no limit of the number files to be zipped in one session. Once you have chosen your desired files, Just press the Zip it button and you will be provided with a Link to download the Zip archive of the files that you have chosen that you can store either online or on your hard-drive, this is particularly very useful to back up your data and compress them in zip file for future use.

I’ve always been in search of small and useful applications that could replace the use of big and heavy applications. For instance, simple photo editing can also be done with lighter tools rather than having Adobe Photoshop.
InstantMask is a free tool to remove background from images. It provides an easy way to crop out the foreground elements and use them with another background.
This free application comes in hardly 5MB of size, much smaller than professional tools Adobe Photoshop.

It looks like the 2010 version will bring some nice features that IM addicts and average users have been requesting for years. According to the screenshot, tabbed-browsing will be finally coming to WLM.
And for social network junkies, Windows Live Messenger will have in-built features and support for Twitter and Facebook – cool, isn’t it?
Now I can’t wait for the first beta version to come out and give it a spin!
Recently, I came across a great website, Icon Finder, which allows you to search for icon for almost every application. IconFinder.com allows you to search through a huge database of almost 124,176 icons.

All you need to do is type the name of the application or a web service and it will show you all the available icons available in there database.
The site has a very clean and uncluttered interface that makes it easy to find anything you want. It’s my favourite icon finder and so far I’ve been able to find every icon I ever needed.

1. Install the retweet button
A lot of people realize the importance of an article when they read it. But most people need to be told the importance of an article before they realize its significance. When your articles are engaging enough, your blog visitors tend to form an opinion for or against what you have written. Either way is fine, but ensure you instigate their thoughts to make an opinion. Such a visitor shall surely be looking to put his point of view forward to his group, and the retweet button reminds him to do just that – retweet your link.
2. Cater to the Ego
Let us suppose you write an article on “Most beautiful cities in the world”. No matter how much time you spent in researching your subject, all that the reader wants to know is whether his city has made it to the list or not. A tweet on this post mentioning the title of this post with a link to your blog might get you casual visits, but then that is not enough to make them hungry to retweet. To do that, soothe or hurt their ego. A tweet that reads ‘Detroit better than New York in beautiful city list’ is sure to make both Detroit and New Yorkers read your blog and either praise or curse you while retweeting. And people from other cities are always going to visit you to see where their city stands!
3. Find the maven
While growing your followership is important, the quality of your followership is important too. There are the ‘absorbant‘ kinds – those who read all your tweets but don’t care sharing them to others and the ‘dispersant‘ kinds – those who retweet anything mildly interesting. Study the behavior of twitterers, and follow them. Retweet interesting links they have posted (Why? Read Point 2). Reply to their tweets with your opinion or suggesting better reads. They are sure to follow you. They matter a LOT!
4. Direct message with link
If you blog about “pets”, keep following all that people tweet about “pets”. You can do so by simply following the Twitter search RSS feed for that particular keyword on your RSS reader. Study the kind of things people tweet about. A lot of them could be people tweeting queries on the subject. Check back on your blog to see if you have written about those queries. If not, write down a quick post and reply to the twitterer with this link. Do this to a few people a day and you will have people following your blog posts blindly and retweeting every article you post.
5. Put it in perspective
Statistics are great. People like them a lot. But you need put your statistics in perspective to get them ‘retweet’ interested. “200 people infected with Swine flu” is a good article to tweet about. But what does the reader want to know? 200 people – Is it too many people or less? But suppose you tweet ‘Swine flu has affected 50% more people than SARS’- now this is something that will set the reader thinking.
Have you noticed the amount of spam on Twitter lately? It seems to increase everyday and is really getting out of control. If you want to save yourself the trouble of having to self-analyze every Twitter user, then you should give TrueTwit a try. It’s a validation service for Twitter that separates the humans from the robots. It saves you time and trouble by helping you weed out automated Twitter spammers.
When you sign up for free, all of your new followers will receive a DM asking them to validate themselves. If you want to send your existing followers a validation DM you’ll have to do that manually after signing up. TrueTwit uses Twitter OAuth, so there’s no need to give out your password. They suggest that you go to your Twitter settings and uncheck the “email when someone starts following me” box, so that you only receive notifications from TrueTwit.
Once you sign up and sync TrueTwit with your Twitter account, you can now login and start managing your current followers. Here you can view and manage validation request and replies. You’ll be able to see how many validation request were sent on the current day and how many followers were verified. All of your followers will be listed and you’ll see 4 columns (pictured below) that will show you if that user is verified, if a message was sent to them, if you’re following them and if they’re blocked.
Drop.io, the super simple file sharing service has released a Yahoo Mail Application that allows Yahoo mail users to attach upto 100MB files to the mails while sending. The application is enabled by default for all users.
To use the feature select the “Attach Large Files” application from Applications Menu in yahoo mail, the application is not available via mail editor, you need to go through theapplication, attach files first and compose a message.
The recipients can see the attached files in a special drop.io page and comment on that or download to their computer. The files will expire after 30 days.
Drop.io developer says that the app is completely based on drop.io open API, i think they are showing the power of drop.io API with this application.
This is not the first app for sending large files with Yahoo Mail, Zumodrive has anapplication for quite some time that also allows you upload large files.
The Drop.io app is useful for Yahoo Mail users who want to send large attachments via email, and it will give some exposure to drop.io.
